The world is taking notice of a secret we’ve known for years:
Asheville is one of the greatest places in the world to explore.
Whether it’s experiencing a sunset on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or sampling every item at Curate, Asheville has enough food and adventure to last a lifetime.
The next time you’re in town, be sure to try my personal list of top food + adventure options Asheville has to offer:
Cuisine:
1.) The Deviled Egg at NightBell
Founded by renowned chef Katie Button in 2014, Nightbell is an American small-plate restaurant with a focus on local Appalachian ingredients.
Although the title says “deviled egg”, I assure you this is the best version of a deviled egg you will ever experience. Believe it or not, it is my favorite small dish in all of Asheville (and I am not alone).
2.) Lo-Fi Burger at Cooper Crown
This burger is worth the drive outside of downtown! Copper Crown is an East Asheville favorite with influences from the American South, Italy, & New Orleans. Try their Lo-Fi burger and be ready for the future cravings to set-in.
3.) Coconut Delight at Vortex Doughnuts
- You’ve probably seen their delicious doughnuts all over Facebook and Instagram…and for good reason!!
- Vortex Doughnuts is an Asheville staple that handmakes extravagant doughnuts every morning. My personal favorite is the Coconut Delight, but be sure to stop in early so they aren’t sold out!
4.) AVL IPA at Highland Brewing Company
Founded in 1994, Highland Brewing Company is the original Asheville craft brewery. With a recently redesigned logo, a fantastic event space & rooftop, and a friendly and engaging staff, Highland is a can’t miss.
If you are in Asheville in the Fall, be sure to check out the tasting room to try the most coveted beer around – Cold Mountain.
If you visit in the Summer, don’t miss out on the AVL IPA – a brew dedicated to the great city of Asheville.
5.) Concrete Jungle at Nine Mile
- Nine Mile is a caribbean-inspired restaurant that never disappoints.
- With truly unique menu options, and two locations, Nine Mile is a must on your trip to Asheville.
- If you are craving seafood, try the Concrete Jungle! With linguine, fresh vegetables, pan-seared scallops, and mussels, your taste buds will surely thank you.
Adventure:
1.) Hike Graveyard Fields + Black Balsam Knob
Attracting thousands of visitors a year, Black Balsam Knob and Graveyard Fields are popular hiking destinations. Located in the Pisgah National Forest (just a few miles apart), these miles of hiking trails offer spectacular views of the Southern Appalachians, and even a few waterfalls. Be sure to visit in the early fall to witness the famous changing of the leaves.
2.) Discover the Biltmore Estate
You can’t mention Asheville without mentioning the Biltmore Estate. Outside of being the largest private residence in the United States, the Biltmore has an extensive network of walking, hiking, biking, and equestrian trails that zig zag across the 7,000 acres of rolling hills. Enjoy touring the house in the morning, then head over to Antler Village for a bike rental to complete your afternoon exploration.
3.) Book a LaZoom Bus Tour
LaZoom is the most unique, memorable way to see the sights of Asheville. With a handful of tour options that include comedy sketches and sightseeing, you’ll have no problem finding your favorite. Be sure to bring your sense of humor!!
4.) Explore Downtown Asheville
From the unlimited amount of unique, local shops, to the talented musicians that set-up and play on street corners, it’s hard to go wrong in downtown Asheville. Take an afternoon to experience all the sights, from the South Slope to The Grove Arcade – you won’t regret it.
5.) Take a Drive Along the Blue Ridge Parkway
Stretching from Virginia all the way to Western North Carolina, the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most scenic drives in the nation. If you are looking for breathtaking views, take an afternoon drive up to Mount Pisgah and Craggy Gardens. The views are once in a lifetime (and offer an escape from the summer heat!)
These are only a handful of the great adventure and food options Asheville has to offer! There are many more throughout the city, so don’t hesitate to pop into a local restaurant, or check-out another local event.
